Assembling Wastes
Research residency in Marseille
In collaboration with Claire Chassot of Seasonal Neighbours, with the support of Culture Moves Europe, a project funded by the European Union.
2025, Marseille
During the month of April, ife collective spent fourteen days in Marseille conducting research on the theme of waste—both in its material and conceptual dimensions—through engagement with various local initiatives. Thanks to the hospitality and guidance of artist Claire Chassot, we connected with several experiences rooted in ecology, agriculture, and culture, through which we engaged in dialogue, exchanges, hands-on activities, and collected materials relevant to our investigation.
Over the two weeks of residency, we explored waste by tracing its uses in different contexts and opening a dialogue between the practices of the people and places we encountered and our own work within our territorial and operational framework. Waste, in this process, shifted from being a mere material to becoming a generative gap—a critical space that allows us to assemble insights to feed our projects and imaginaries. Waste is a space for revolution, where we can experiment with and nurture generative relationships for territories and communities. Waste is omnipresent—it takes on different forms and textures, acts in diverse ways, and represents an opportunity to be revitalized through collective perspectives and forward-looking visions capable of breaking thresholds and stirring the soil, creating new vibrations.
The realities we visited and engaged with include: La Bastide à Fruits, Mycotopia, La Cité de l'Agriculture, Le Couvent, Friche La Belle de Mai, and Collectif SAFI.
This residency is supported with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed in this work can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
